Good news! Finding a flexible job and extending parental leave has been made easier for parents with the introduction of new national labour laws. Effective January 2010, the Right to Request a flexible work arrangement and extend unpaid parental leave up to 24 months was introduced by the Federal Government as part of the new National Employment Standards. All Australian workers caring for children under school age or with a disability up to age 18 now have the right to request their employer for a flexible work arrangement. Employers have an obligation to investigate the viability of the flexible work request and formally respond, in writing, to the employees’ request.
